Ice balls

Today we made ice balls with the boys! A small experiment to get us talking about the properties of water. How it can change from water to ice and then back to water. To do so I took a balloon, placed a plastic creepy crawler from our Halloween box in it, filled the ballon with water and placed it in the freezer until it froze. Once ready, I cut and pulled away the ballon and out came the ice ball! Wish I had a picture with the expression on their faces!!! Pure amazement!

I then asked then how we could get the animal out... Oskar suggested we bang it... He tried with a small rock but made little progress. Dexie kept saying how cold it was. I said it was frozen and that maybe we had to warm it up a bit. Oskar carried the ice ball to the bath sink, they both climbed up, turned the tap on and watched amused the ball melting away!

Great experiment! We then went on to freeze : a strawberry, a leaf, a coin, a playmobil man and a dinosaur!

This is also a great way to get them in the bath if they are not in the mood!
